Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) has been selected to support Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) in the design and preparation of detailed technical and functional specifications for a new measurement and instrumentation testing and calibration facility.

Funded by the World Bank, the 22-week assignment will help EEP establish a state-of-the-art facility to improve the accuracy and reliability of measurement and instrumentation testing, strengthen energy management and auditing functions, and support the continued growth of Ethiopia’s power system.

The project will focus on more than equipment selection. MHI will help define the technical and functional requirements for a facility that is designed to international standards, with efficient workflows, mobile testing capabilities and the flexibility to serve both EEP’s needs and potential regional demand.

The facility is also expected to strengthen EEP’s research and development capabilities, support collaboration and training, and improve the utility’s ability to maintain a skilled mobile workforce. By developing its testing and calibration capabilities, EEP can improve operational efficiency, support revenue management and create opportunities to generate revenue by providing services to other organizations.

The project also reflects MHI’s longstanding experience supporting utilities in developing and rapidly changing power systems. MHI has delivered utility management, technical advisory, training, metering, hydropower and capacity-building projects across Africa, including work in Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

This latest assignment extends that experience to Ethiopia, supporting EEP as it strengthens the systems and capabilities needed to manage an expanding electricity network.
